Price Guide

Prices for copy-editing and proofreading are based on an hourly rate. Precise costs depend on the length and nature of the material and how much and what kind of work needs to be done on it.

Copy-editing and proofreading have nothing to do with speed reading. As a broad rule of thumb:
Non-fiction - 8-12 pages per hour (against copy)
Fiction - 12-15 pages per hour (against copy)
Around 50% more material can be read if the copy is read blind (without an original master copy).

The going rate is around £12:50 per hour for proofreading and around £1 more for editing. This charge is net of expenses. That said, prices are negotiable, and I am likely to be sympathetic to the needs of other small businesses.

Humans read around 25% slower on screens than on paper, and prices must take account of that, so screenreading is more expensive.

Editors do not generally make enough money to have to charge VAT.

Copywriting services are in line with NUJ rates.

A 15% student discount is available if you contact me through an academic email account and attach a scanned image of your matriculation card or other evidence of your student status. Discounts are only available for work up to around 10,000 words in length.
